The Web-Browser Setup Method

Things you would need

If you choose to continue with the App method for setup, you’ll need to download and install the D-Link app on your smartphone or other mobile device. Based on the platform you are on, you can navigate through the application store to look for and download the app. If you are an iOS user, you can use the Apple App Store, and if you are on Android, you can use the Google Play Store. The app will have an icon similar to the one shown below:

Once you have the app installed, you can launch it to follow the on-screen instructions and configure the extender settings. For users, who already have the app installed on their device, make sure the app is on the latest version. If not, you can update it easily by going to the app store.

Secondly, you will need the main router’s credentials including the network SSID and the password. If you don’t have these details, you can log in to the router’s setup wizard and copy the details.

Finally, make sure you have the default settings for your range extender. These will include the default login web address, the username and the password as well.

Username: admin; Password: admin

Default login address: http://dlinkap.local or http://192.168.0.1

D-Link DAP-X1870 Setup- App based method

Preparing for the setup

To start with the configuration process, plug in your extender into the power outlet. Prefer one that is near to your main router.
Allow the extender to boot up and the status LEDs to show their respective status.
Connect your smartphone or mobile device to the D-link extender’s network. Go to the WiFi Settings on your smartphone and look for the D-link extender network SSID.
Once the same becomes visible in the available networks list, select it and click on the Connect
The smartphone will connect to the D-link’s network and you will see the WiFi icon on the top status bar.

Accessing the D-Link App for Setup

Launch the D-Link WiFi App on your smartphone.
On the main screen, tap on the Install New Device
Scan the QR code that you see on the Quick Installation card and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup process.
The range extender interface will now scan for the available router networks in your area. A list of the same will be shown to you on the screen.
Now, select the appropriate network name that belongs to your main router and click on the Connect
If asked for a password, type in the router’s network password and click on the Join
The D-Link DAP-X1870 Setup wizard will validate the network credentials and then connect you to the router network.

Editing the network and device settings

The next screen on the D-Link WiFi app will take you to the network configuration window. You can type in the SSID and password you wish to keep for your extender network. You can also edit the details for the 5GHz network easily.
Once edited, click on the Save and Next
You will now be taken to the device configuration window. Here, you can edit the details related to the device username and password. Securing your device with these credentials will help prevent unauthorised device access.
Edit the username and password details and finally click on the Next
You’ll now be shown a summary of the device settings on your device screen. Review the same and finally, click on the Finish

Your D-link range extender is now configured for use. If you wish, you can relocate the same to a place you want. The signal LED on the extender will reveal the strength of the WiFi signals that the extender is able to receive. The signal LED is located on the far top left corner of the device. If you choose to continue with the web based setup method, you can use the default web address http://dlinkap.local in the address bar of your web browser to access the setup wizard. Once you have accessed the same, you can begin with the setup process easily.

Web browsers like Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox can be used.

One additional thing that will differ here is you’ll have a choice to connect your devices using wired connections as well. You can use ethernet cables to connect your devices and make the connection process easier to execute. FInally, you can proceed with the similar steps as discussed in the app-based method to further configure the network and device settings and complete the setup process.

Once configured, relocate the extender to the location that is halfway between the router and the place where you’ll be using the internet at.
